VAI Phase II achieves LEED Platinum certification

Van Andel Institute’s 240,000-square-foot Phase II building has been awarded Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED®) Platinum status by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Platinum is the highest level of certification that may be achieved. The award sets the Institute and its facility apart with a dozen national peers as a leader of sustainable building practices in the field of biomedical research.

“Van Andel Institute’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Van Andel Institute serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”

“Van Andel Institute’s Phase II building is innovative in design, and incorporates a multitude of green initiatives beyond what seemed possible for a research institute just a few short years ago,” said VAI Chairman and CEO David Van Andel. “And while LEED Platinum certification is a tremendously gratifying accomplishment, we set out from the very beginning to be a leader in terms of sustainable building practices because we knew that it is the right things to do.”

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) recently awarded the Aon Build America Award to CONSOL Energy Center for Best New Building Project. A panel of judges, representing all areas of construction, evaluated over 115 projects this year, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques and coordination with partners, among other criteria. “These projects require tremendous skill, extraordinary craftsmanship and dogged determination from their contractors,” noted Ted Aadland, ACG’s president. “Frankly, they are the kind of projects all of us dream of completing.”

The PJ Dick-Hunt Joint Venture, made up of PJ Dick and Hunt Construction Group, provided construction management-at-risk services for CONSOL Energy Center – the new home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. Hunt Wins AZAGC Safety Award

Jack Robertson and Mike Gausden accepting award.

Hunt Construction Group was recently chosen as the winner of the Arizona Chapter of Associated General Contractors 2009 Safety Awards for Specialty/Building 100,000 to 300,000 man hours worked. The selection was made from a number of criteria, including Hunt’s safety record.

Additionally, Hunt’s Safety & Loss Prevention Officer, Bill Reaves, was chosen as a runner up for the 2009 Safety Professional of the year.

Hunt prides itself on ensuring that its safety record remains among the best in the industry. Hunt understands that by implementing effective safety systems, including training and employee involvement at all levels will result in low injury and lost workday rates.

This award follows Hunt’s recent recognition by the U.S. Department of Labor. In 2009, our Western Division was awarded Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) status from the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health, based on the quality and implementation of our safety and health program. Hunt is the first and only building construction contractor in the state of Arizona to qualify for this prestigious status. VPP status gives a project the privilege of exemption from OSHA’s programmed compliance inspections.
