Happy Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day. At Hunt, we find this is a good time to reflect back on what we have done over the past year to promote sustainable practices and what new accomplishments we are going to strive for in the coming year.

Doing our part to protect the environment is both our duty and privilege. It is why we have adopted our own Green Initiatives in an effort to live, work and deliver projects with sustainable practices in mind.  Our expectation is that these programs will continue to evolve and change with new ideas, technology, input from the Hunt family and collaboration with our trade contracting partners and vendors.

The accompanying infographic (click for larger image) is a snapshot of Hunt’s sustainability program and achievements. The video below is a highlight of the sustainable practices in place on New Marlins Ballpark in Miami, FL. The project is pursuing LEED® Gold certification and will open in the spring of 2012.

Barclays Center roof taking shape

The Barclays Center area project in Brooklyn is starting to stand out. The first of the arena’s six large roof trusses have been erected. With them in place, the height of the 675,000-square-foot facility really becomes apparent. About 30 percent of the steel is already up, and the foundation is 70 percent complete.

The precast steps will be put in place within the next 30 days or so, giving a full sense of the completed seating bowl. The first part of the facade is expected to be in place by mid-July, and the roof should be in place by year’s end. The facility is on track to open on schedule in mid-2012 — just months before the Nets call the arena home starting that fall.

The 18,000-seat arena will have a unique weathered-steel facade, with a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza greeting fans at Atlantic and Flatbush avenues. A canopy at the main entrance will include a circular cutout, or oculus, that lets in the sun and will display a giant marquee to advertise upcoming events. A subway station also is being built at the site that is said to be the third-busiest mass transit hub in New York City.

New Marlins Ballpark celebrates topping out

As Opening Day 2011 approaches; the Marlins took a major step toward finishing the stadium that will host their Opening Day in 2012.

Hunt/Moss workers installed the last major structural piece of steel in the retractable roof at the new Marlins Ballpark site this morning.

“This is one of the key milestones of the project,” said executive vice president of ballpark development Claude Delorme. “When you look back to when we laid the foundation, and now you see the last piece of steel go up, you realize how amazing it is. Having this last piece of steel go up and you see guys working at 250 feet high, it’s very satisfying to have that behind us.”

Prior to the installation, over 800 construction workers, as well as Marlins executives, Miami Dade County officials, City of Miami officials and key members of the Hunt/Moss Joint Venture team, signed the steel beam.

“Seeing the faces of the people signing the beam was very gratifying, not only for our executives but for the workers as well,” Delorme said. “The work that they’ve done is second to none. I’m happy for them, because it’s really been a team effort.”

Twin Arrows Casino breaks ground

The Navajo Nation broke ground March 21 on a $150 million casino project along Interstate 40 east of Flagstaff.

Hunt will begin the first phase of construction on Twin Arrows Casino & Resort next month. Tribal officials have planned a July 1, 2012 opening.

The casino is the tribe’s first in Arizona. Plans call for a hotel, conference center, spa and golf course at the site.

Navajo President Ben Shelly says tribal officials will hold a job fair to fill the positions. The tribe has a Navajo preference in employment.

He says the tribe will rely on county officials for law enforcement and fire protection.

About 350 people attended Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony.

The tribe opened its first casino east of Gallup, N.M., in 2008.

Closer look at New Marlins Ballpark roof

The Hunt/Moss Joint Venture has been working with LPR Construction Co. for the installation and structural design of the impressive retractable roof structure at New Marlins Ballpark. LPR Construction Co. has provided a closer look at what it takes to deliver such a complex and massive moveable structure.

The structural steel is being fabricated by STRUCTAL (a division of the CANAM Group). Structural design of the roof is by Walter P. Moore and the roof transport system has been designed and fabricated by UNI-Systems. Roof transporters are being installed by UNI-Systems and LPR.

Local contractor DKG is providing many essential site construction services including shoring foundations, miscellaneous steel erections as well as installation of the critical transporter rail components. Steel Fabricators, LLC in Fort Lauderdale, provided most of the newly fabricated shoring steel for the project

LPR Construction is also responsible for the structural design, fabrication and installation of the temporary shoring system to support the 533-foot and 569-foot span roof panels, which will crest at 255 feet above ground level. This shoring system, and the associated steel erection procedure for the roof structure, has been meticulously designed by LPR with the help of KL&A, Inc. Structural Engineers and Builders to resist hurricane level winds at any stage of construction.

Hunt/Populous selected for San Jose Convention Center expansion

The San Jose City Council has unanimously approved the selection of the Hunt Construction Group / Populous team for the renovation and expansion of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.  Hunt will lead the Design-Build team with Populous as the designer.

“San Jose is known as one of the country’s most innovative cities, and Hunt/Populous have been recognized as an innovative Design-Build team,” said Todd Voth, Populous senior principal leading the project. “We’ll let the spirit of innovation drive this unique opportunity to bring to life all that is great about the city of San Jose.”

The convention center, which opened in 1989, will undergo more than $100 million in renovation and addition work funded through an endorsement by local hotels agreeing to tax themselves in support of this project. The proposed addition, which will bring the convention center to more than 1.3 million square feet, will make San Jose’s the 5th largest convention center in California.  “We are thrilled for the opportunity to collaborate with the City of San Jose and convention center stakeholders on this exciting project.” said Tim Smith, Project Executive and Vice President at Hunt.

Hunt/Populous’ goal for the project is to design, build and deliver a responsible building that maximizes functional connectivity with the existing center.  To achieve this, the proposed design will create a blend of indoor and outdoor space. The renovated entry plaza will create opportunities for unique meeting and exhibit environments that blur the line between inside and out.  In addition, Hunt/Populous will ensure the building is constructed and operates efficiently and sustainably.

Amway Center enters final stretch

The Amway Center began its journey on July 26, 2007 when the Orange County Commission approved a public building program in a 5 – 2 vote. This program included a new events center, performing arts center and renovation of the Citrus Bowl Stadium.

On July 25, 2008, the stadium started taking physical shape as Hunt Construction Group, in association with Rey, Albu, HZ and Burns alongside architect Populous and owner Orlando Magic, held the official groundbreaking. The then unnamed facility became Amway Center on August 5, 2009.

The Amway Center was designed to reflect the character of the community, meet the goals of the users and build on the legacy of sports and entertainment in Orlando.

The building’s exterior features a modern blend of glass and metal materials, along with ever-changing graphics via a monumental wall along one façade. A 180-foot tall tower and spire serves as a beacon amid the downtown skyline.

At 875,000 square feet, the new arena is almost triple the size of the old Amway Arena. The building features a sustainable, environmentally friendly design, unmatched technology, featuring 1,100 digital monitors and the largest, high-definition scoreboard in an NBA venue as well as multiple premium amenities available to all patrons in the building. Every level of ticket buyer will have access to: the Budweiser Baseline Bar, Club Restaurant, Nutrilite Magic Fan Experience, Orlando on Demand Info Garden, Kid’s Zone, and multiple indoor-outdoor spaces which celebrate Florida’s climate.

LEED® Gold awarded to Coyote Ridge Corrections Center

Completed by the Hunt/Lydig Joint Venture in December 2008 with Integrus Architecture, Coyote Ridge Corrections Center recently received its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification.

The 560,000-square-foot Coyote Ridge Corrections Center is the first correctional facility to achieve LEED Gold certification. Even better, building the facility to LEED standards did not add to the overall construction cost; helping to set a new standard in correctional facility construction.

Building to higher standards has many benefits. The state will benefit long-term from reduced utility costs thanks to a decrease in the use of water, sewer, natural gas and electricity. Overall, it is estimated the prison will use 32% less energy when compared to a similar-size facility.
