Chatham County Detention Center Expansion Groundbreaking

The largest capital improvement project in Chatham County history is now underway.  On March 8, 2011, Sheriff Al St Lawrence and Chatham County Commissioners broke ground on the Chatham County Detention Center Expansion Project in Savannah, GA.

In December 2010, County Commissioners awarded a $71 million dollar construction contract to Hunt-Mills, A Joint Venture.  Sixty-six percent of the site preparation and construction work is going to local subcontractors and construction will take approximately 2 1/2 years.

Matthew Barnes, a Vice President and Officer for Hunt Construction Group said, “Hunt-Mills, with our associate partners Brownstone Construction Group and Sierra Design Build Construction Management Group are proud to be a part of this community project.  We understand the significant responsibility bestowed upon us and will work diligently toward maximizing the participation of local subcontractors and suppliers while expediting the work to achieve a quality project in a safe and efficient manner.”

“Everyone here at W.G. Mills is very excited to be partnered with Hunt Construction Group and to be a part of this significant project,” said W.G. Mills Senior Project Executive Joe Frisco.  “The renovations and expansion to the Chatham County Detention Center is a critically important project to Chatham County and its tax payers.  We know this project has been a long time in coming and would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts on the part of the County and its staff.  This will be a very challenging project and we look forward to working with our partners and the entire Chatham County team.”

The retirement of two Hunt high-flyers

Dan Lazear and Ron Terry are two members of the Hunt family with perhaps the most unique office around – the cockpit of Hunt’s company aircraft. The two of them have been all around the nation to Hunt’s many landmark projects and played an integral role in the growth of the company.

This year, the Hunt family is saying goodbye as Dan and Ron celebrate their retirement. Hunt Chairman/CEO Robert G. Hunt shared, “For over 35 years, Ron Terry and Dan Lazear have logged thousands of hours flying Hunt people across the world. The tenure in itself is quite an accomplishment. On top of that, they got us all to our destinations safely, and for that I am extremely grateful and appreciative as are all of your hundreds of passengers.”

Landmark Aviation at Scottsdale Municipal Airport and the Scottsdale Fire Department welcomed Dan home on his last flight on January 29 with a water salute. The water salute is a longstanding tradition marked by a water cannon vehicle or series of vehicles lined up perpendicular on the sides of the taxiway or apron to form an arch or series of arches.

Ed Smith Stadium reaches top of the ninth

Hunt Construction Group, with local firm W.G. Mills, is nearing the end of renovation construction for Ed Smith Stadium. The facility features new amenities such as triple the amount of concession stands, shaded awnings, new entrance with full field view, air conditioned deli and retail store, garden area, 100 additional toilets and urinals and numerous television monitors.

The largest structural change to the ballpark is the addition of the second-floor concourse. This area features all the usual amenities associated with a modern-day ballpark. Arches have been added to the two-story façade and a 35,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art clubhouse has been constructed to give the facility some extra space. Also, a 9,000-square-foot office suite has been added on to the existing press box to bring life and activity to the facility year-round.

Gone are the old blue seats in favor of refurbished dark green seats from Camden Yards. Not only is the move a cost saver but it’s a sustainable one as well. Additionally, a 7-foot-high outfield wall is being added to give the facility that classic ballpark feel complete with the potential for the classic wall jump catch.

Hunt holiday community service

With the holiday season behind us and the new year fast approaching, now seems like an appropriate time to step back and recognize some of the community service efforts in which Hunt employees and jobsites participated this season.

The items below account for only a small number of the numerous efforts company-wide this year, however they give a good example of how companies can support their local community. Hunt would like to thank all those who continually work to help make a difference and encourage others to do the same.

Closer look at New Marlins Ballpark roof

The Hunt/Moss Joint Venture has been working with LPR Construction Co. for the installation and structural design of the impressive retractable roof structure at New Marlins Ballpark. LPR Construction Co. has provided a closer look at what it takes to deliver such a complex and massive moveable structure.

The structural steel is being fabricated by STRUCTAL (a division of the CANAM Group). Structural design of the roof is by Walter P. Moore and the roof transport system has been designed and fabricated by UNI-Systems. Roof transporters are being installed by UNI-Systems and LPR.

Local contractor DKG is providing many essential site construction services including shoring foundations, miscellaneous steel erections as well as installation of the critical transporter rail components. Steel Fabricators, LLC in Fort Lauderdale, provided most of the newly fabricated shoring steel for the project

LPR Construction is also responsible for the structural design, fabrication and installation of the temporary shoring system to support the 533-foot and 569-foot span roof panels, which will crest at 255 feet above ground level. This shoring system, and the associated steel erection procedure for the roof structure, has been meticulously designed by LPR with the help of KL&A, Inc. Structural Engineers and Builders to resist hurricane level winds at any stage of construction.
