The largest capital improvement project in Chatham County history is now underway. On March 8, 2011, Sheriff Al St Lawrence and Chatham County Commissioners broke ground on the Chatham County Detention Center Expansion Project in Savannah, GA.

The largest capital improvement project in Chatham County history is now underway. On March 8, 2011, Sheriff Al St Lawrence and Chatham County Commissioners broke ground on the Chatham County Detention Center Expansion Project in Savannah, GA.

In December 2010, County Commissioners awarded a $71 million dollar construction contract to Hunt-Mills, A Joint Venture. Sixty-six percent of the site preparation and construction work is going to local subcontractors and construction will take approximately 2 1/2 years.

Matthew Barnes, a Vice President and Officer for Hunt Construction Group said, “Hunt-Mills, with our associate partners Brownstone Construction Group and Sierra Design Build Construction Management Group are proud to be a part of this community project. We understand the significant responsibility bestowed upon us and will work diligently toward maximizing the participation of local subcontractors and suppliers while expediting the work to achieve a quality project in a safe and efficient manner.”

“Everyone here at W.G. Mills is very excited to be partnered with Hunt Construction Group and to be a part of this significant project,” said W.G. Mills Senior Project Executive Joe Frisco. “The renovations and expansion to the Chatham County Detention Center is a critically important project to Chatham County and its tax payers. We know this project has been a long time in coming and would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts on the part of the County and its staff. This will be a very challenging project and we look forward to working with our partners and the entire Chatham County team.”

The current jail was built in 1992 with 1,224 inmate beds. Four and a half years later it reached its capacity. Today the inmate population count is close to 1,800. In late 2010 it reached a record 1,973 inmates.

The expansion project will add 400,000 square feet and bring the total number of inmate beds to 2,300, nearly double the current capacity. Major renovations will be done to the administration building, medical, kitchen, laundry and warehouse facilities. New security and fire alarm systems will be installed A work-release center will also be built and the new facility will accommodate the need for any possible future expansions.

Sheriff St Lawrence said, “I would like to thank the taxpayers and voters for understanding the need for this facility—a facility that will help keep dangerous criminals locked up and out of our neighborhoods.”

The Sheriff also thanks his deputies. “They are the ones who have felt the brunt of this overcrowding problem. They have put up with an increase in inmate fights and attacks and still they put their uniform on each day and come to work. This groundbreaking signifies a light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

William D. Mott of Hunt Construction Group in Indianapolis - education and outreach in construction

The 2011 Governor’s Workplace Safety Awards for advancing occupational safety and health were awarded March 2nd at a luncheon ceremony at the 2011 Indiana Safety and Health Conference & Expo in Indianapolis, presented by the Central Indiana Chapter of American Society of Safety Engineers and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. Indiana Commissioner of Labor Lori A. Torres, on behalf of Gov. Mitch Daniels, presented the honors to eight Hoosier companies and one individual.

The 2011 Governor’s Workplace Safety Awards are a result of a partnership among government, business and safety leaders: the Indiana Department of Labor, on behalf of the Governor, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers.

“This award recognizes companies and individuals that focus on best practices for eliminating job-related accidents and illnesses,” shares Torres. “It also salutes those organizations for which safety is the number one workplace priority, because nothing is more important in a workday than someone returning home safe and sound to their families.”

Companies and individuals were recognized in the following categories: overall safety in construction; education and outreach in construction; education and outreach – external, in general industry; education and outreach — internal, in general construction; and innovations in general industry. The 2011 Governor’s Workplace Safety Award recipients are:

Gribbins Insulation Co., Inc. in Evansville — overall safety in construction

William D. Mott of Hunt Construction Group in Indianapolis – education and outreach in construction

Monsanto Company in Windfall — external education and outreach in general industry

USALCO Michigan City Plant, LLC — internal education and outreach in general industry by a small company (under 100 employees)

Peerless Pump Company in Indianapolis — internal education and outreach in general industry by a medium company (101 to 499 employees)

Raytheon Technical Services Company Customized Engineering and Depot Support Indianapolis — internal education and outreach in general industry by a large company (more than 500 employees)

Univertical Corporation in Angola — innovations in general industry by a small company

Acument Global Technologies, Camcar LLC, Rochester Operations — innovations in general industry by a medium company

Union Hospital, Inc., in Terre Haute — innovations in general industry by a large company

Each of the 2011 award recipients demonstrated a strong commitment to workplace safety and health through innovation, education and work practices, says Indiana Chamber President Kevin Brinegar.

“A healthier workplace means more productive workers and a more profitable workplace. By providing an environment of workplace safety, these award winners are protecting the company’s most important asset — its workers.”

Dan Lazear and Ron Terry are two members of the Hunt family with perhaps the most unique office around – the cockpit of Hunt’s company aircraft.

Dan Lazear and Ron Terry are two members of the Hunt family with perhaps the most unique office around – the cockpit of Hunt’s company aircraft. The two of them have been all around the nation to Hunt’s many landmark projects and played an integral role in the growth of the company.

This year, the Hunt family is saying goodbye as Dan and Ron celebrate their retirement. Hunt Chairman/CEO Robert G. Hunt shared, “For over 35 years, Ron Terry and Dan Lazear have logged thousands of hours flying Hunt people across the world. The tenure in itself is quite an accomplishment. On top of that, they got us all to our destinations safely, and for that I am extremely grateful and appreciative as are all of your hundreds of passengers.”

Landmark Aviation at Scottsdale Municipal Airport and the Scottsdale Fire Department welcomed Dan home on his last flight on January 29 with a water salute. The water salute is a longstanding tradition marked by a water cannon vehicle or series of vehicles lined up perpendicular on the sides of the taxiway or apron to form an arch or series of arches.

Symbolically, the procession looks similar to the Arch of Sabres at a military wedding. Over history, these salutes have been used to mark the retirement of a senior pilot (as is the case here), air traffic controller or the first or last flight of an airline to an airport.

Dan said he can still recall his first flight with Hunt back in April 1973 from Indianapolis to Scottsdale in a King Air 100k with R.C. Hunt and Mrs. Hunt. The first jet was purchased in July of that year. The Learjet 25 made the same Indianapolis to Scottsdale trip with R.C. and Mrs. Hunt once again.

There were many memorable flights over the years and Dan recently recalled some of his favorites. He remembers a flight to Germany, Switzerland and Ireland with a fuel stop in Greenland on a trip with R.C. Hunt in 1994. It was an experience he says he will always remember for the exciting journey it was in the company of R.C.

Other memorable trips included a flight with Ronald Reagan onboard following his nomination by the Republican Party and a flight with Gerald Ford after his Presidency in 1977. Dan also vividly recalls R.C. coming into the cockpit once to tell him to slow down so he could have more time building a client relationship. Dan pointed out that “we got that contract”. Dan was proud to say there were too many good memories to recall them all here but that the aircraft continues to prove a valuable asset to the company.

The extensive flight logs of these two serve as a fine example of Hunt’s growth over the years. Dan’s alone shows he has been on over 11,000 flights and has logged over 18,000 hours of flight time with Hunt Construction Group and The Hunt Corporation.

“In 1973, when Dad hired Dan, he tasked him with developing a top-rated flight department and crew. Dan, as Hunt’s Chief Pilot, you were successful. Thank you for 38 years of traveling safely and most importantly, thank you for your friendship,” added Hunt.

Dan closed by saying “It’s been such a privilege to fly for the Hunts all these years. Their support of me has been overwhelming! I will always be grateful to them and the many family members (fellow employees) that I have flown with. Great people make a great company and I’m thankful I was part of that family.”

Dan and Ron have always embraced Hunt’s primary value – “The right people. The right results”. It is with great honor that we, the Hunt family, say goodbye and thank them for their years of dedicated service and commitment to Hunt’s continued success.

Hunt Construction Group is proud to have joined White Lodging and The City of Indianapolis in celebrating the February 4 opening of the new JW Marriott Indianapolis. The Hunt team and partners Mezzetta Construction Services, Inc., Smoot Construction and Finch Constructors, Inc. worked together to deliver the world’s largest JW Marriott. The impressive facility completes the Marriott Place development project occupying seven acres along the west side of downtown Indianapolis.

Hunt began work on the $450 million complex in May 2008 with CSO Architects and HOK Group on the design side. The Marriott Place Indianapolis is made up of a collection of five Marriott properties offering unprecedented options for business and leisure travelers. In addition to the new JW Marriott Indianapolis, the complex includes the Courtyard by Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, SpringHill Suites by Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Indianapolis Downtown and the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, making a total of 2,248 rooms.

In addition to 54 meeting rooms and 104,000 square feet of event space, the JW Marriott Indianapolis also houses a 40,500-square-foot Grand Ballroom, the largest hotel ballroom in the Midwest. The completion of the JW Marriott Indianapolis marks the culmination of nearly $3 billion in urban investment in downtown Indianapolis and marks the third major Hunt project in downtown Indianapolis to complete since 2008.

The JW Marriott Indianapolis is the tallest hotel in Indiana at 375 feet tall and 34 stories high. In addition, with 1,005 guest rooms, the hotel is also the largest JW Marriott property in the world. It also features two restaurants including High Velocity and Osteria Pronto with an outdoor patio ready for the spring. With these additions, the hotel also serves as a welcome addition for local residents as well.

The JW Marriott Indianapolis makes a prominent addition to the Indianapolis skyline that Hunt has helped to shape since 1944. Most recently, Hunt completed work on Lucas Oil Stadium (home of NFL’s Indianapolis Colts), Col. H Weir Cook Terminal, Indianapolis Air Traffic Control Tower and Base Administration Building and the Conrad Hotel & Residential Tower.

Other notable projects include Major General Emmett J. Bean Center, Wishard Memorial Hospital Burn Unit, Marriott Convention Center Hotel, the 2001 Indiana Convention Center Expansion, Riley Outpatient Center, Conseco Fieldhouse, RCA Dome Renovation and Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center Expansion to name a few.

Hunt would like to congratulate everyone who helped make this project a success. It took the hard work and dedication of thousands of skilled men and women to make such an impressive facility possible ahead of schedule and under budget. The team was recognized on February 4 at a Contractors Appreciation Event held at the new hotel where attendees could enjoy the impressive finished product in action.

Airports Council International (ACI) recognized Indianapolis International Airport as the best airport in North America today as part of their prestigious annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards for performance excellence.

Airports Council International (ACI) recognized Indianapolis International Airport as the best airport in North America today as part of their prestigious annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards for performance excellence.

ACI named Indianapolis International Airport North America’s best regional airport, a recognition it shares with five other airports from the following regions:

Latin America (Cancun)

Africa (Cape Town)

Middle East (Dubai)

Europe (Malta)

Asia-Pacific (Seoul Incheon)

Indianapolis was also named among the world’s best airports serving less than 15 million passengers a year, placing third behind Nagoya International Airport and Hyderabad International Airport.

‘‘We are honored to have received this outstanding recognition,’’ said John D. Clark, III, executive director & CEO of the Indianapolis Airport Authority. ‘‘I have long believed that Indianapolis International is one of the best airport’s in the world and this award confirms that in the eyes of the aviation and airline industry.’’

Clark noted the recognition provides important benchmarking data and tools to help airports continuously improve the quality of the services they provide, including real-time feedback on the total passenger experience, from the moment of arrival to departure.

‘‘The data shows us how Indianapolis compares to our peers and competitors, providing valuable business intelligence about how we proceed with new projects and implementing the goals outlined in our five-year strategic plan,’’ added Clark.

In 2010, ACI-NA oversaw the administration of 300,000 passenger surveys at participating airports around the world. These surveys served as the basis for determining the top five performers in each of several categories:

Worldwide

By sizes (i.e., number of passengers served in six size categories)

By region (six regional categories)

Most improved (by region)

The world’s top airport is Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea. Incheon has taken the honor for six consecutive years. Other airports in the Asia-Pacific region also were high performers.

‘‘Airports vie for passenger loyalty as they seek to attract new routes and air service,’’ reported Angela Gittens, ACI’s director general. ‘‘Worldwide competition has heightened the importance of service quality at airport’s today.’’

Added Craig Bradbrook, ACI’s program director; ‘‘It shows what is possible when all companies and staff at an airport work together with a shared vision and commitment to provide an excellent customer experience.’’

Hunt Construction Group completed work on the Col. H Weir Cook Terminal at Indianapolis International Airport in November 2008 with joint venture partner Smoot Construction. The design team consisted of CSO Architects and HOK Group. Hunt also completed work on Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008 and the JW Marriott Indianapolis this month.

Hunt would like to congratulate the Indianapolis Airport Authority and all the hardworking men and women who helped design, build and run such an impressive facility.

Hunt Construction Group, with local firm W.G. Mills, is nearing the end of renovation construction for Ed Smith Stadium.

Hunt Construction Group, with local firm W.G. Mills, is nearing the end of renovation construction for Ed Smith Stadium. The facility features new amenities such as triple the amount of concession stands, shaded awnings, new entrance with full field view, air conditioned deli and retail store, garden area, 100 additional toilets and urinals and numerous television monitors.

The largest structural change to the ballpark is the addition of the second-floor concourse. This area features all the usual amenities associated with a modern-day ballpark. Arches have been added to the two-story façade and a 35,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art clubhouse has been constructed to give the facility some extra space. Also, a 9,000-square-foot office suite has been added on to the existing press box to bring life and activity to the facility year-round.

Gone are the old blue seats in favor of refurbished dark green seats from Camden Yards. Not only is the move a cost saver but it’s a sustainable one as well. Additionally, a 7-foot-high outfield wall is being added to give the facility that classic ballpark feel complete with the potential for the classic wall jump catch.

Left field now features a picnic area and serves as home for Boog’s Barbecue, the specialty of former Oriole Boog Powell and a Camden Yards favorite. The bullpens, formerly behind left and right field fences, have been relocated down the left and right field lines. The addition of seats and standing room has increased the stadium’s capacity from roughly 7,500 to close to 9,000.

Construction will complete next month before players report to spring training and well before the big opening game on March 1st.

Built in 1989 to replace Payne Park. In 1998 the Cincinnati Reds made Ed Smith Stadium their home until 2009 when their lease expired with the city and stadium. Prior to the Reds, The Chicago White Sox occupied the facility from 1989 to 1997.

Thanks to the expertise of Hoyt Architects of Sarasota, David Schwarz Architects of Washington D.C. and stadium design expert Janet Marie Smith, the ballpark manages to reflect both the mid-Atlantic origins of the Orioles and the Floridian location in which it resides.

A big congratulations goes out to the Hunt and W.G. Mills team as well as the design team for making this a successful and truly impressive renovation. The opening will mark the beginning of a new journey for Ed Smith Stadium, the Orioles and their fans and gives the City of Sarasota a facility of which to be proud.

With the holiday season behind us and the new year fast approaching, now seems like an appropriate time to step back and recognize some of the community service efforts in which Hunt employees and jobsites participated this season.

The items below account for only a small number of the numerous efforts company-wide this year, however they give a good example of how companies can support their local community. Hunt would like to thank all those who continually work to help make a difference and encourage others to do the same.

Hunt/Moss join Marlins in Christmas tree distribution

For the 2010 holiday season, Hunt/Moss joined the Marlins in distributing Christmas trees at Sunflowers Preschool & Day Care Center. All children received a gift and pre-registered parents received a Christmas tree.

Hunt would like to thank Brandon Herman, Nick Duncan, Justin Reams, Mike Delano, and Todd Willis for their help in making the holidays brighter for everyone involved.

Hunt UC Berkeley team collects for US Marines Toys for Tots

The University of California, Student Athlete High Performance Center project participated in collecting toys for “US Marines Toys for Tots” this season.

Hunt played an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources—our children. We managed to collect four huge bags full of toys in an effort to make sure every boy and girl from a less fortunate family had a memorable Christmas. Hunt personnel and subcontractors on the project teamed up together in bringing holiday smiles to children all around the East Bay.

Hunt promotes supporting the communities in which we work and it’s great to see the team’s efforts making a difference this holiday season.

SAMMC team adopts local families

The San Antonio Military Medical Center jobsite adopted three local families this Christmas. Their efforts helped ensure the families had a true Christmas complete with the tree and a full supply of gifts for the children.

The gifts were delivered to the families on the Monday before Christmas much to the excitement of the kids as each gift came through the door. The SAMMC job has been working hard to support the local community through various efforts including a Habitat for Humanity job in southwest San Antonio. The Clark/Hunt team should be proud of their hard work and dedication to both the project and community in which it resides.

Indianapolis office BIM team helps local food pantry

The Indianapolis office Building Information Modeling team collected food for the Come-to-Me Food Pantry between Thanksgiving and mid December. Shannon DeVon spearheaded the effort after taking part in the collection for the past two years.

Come-to-Me Food Pantry is located on the north of Indianapolis in Fishers, IN and allows clients to receive assistance once each month. Each trip allows the client to receive a full week’s worth of food, laundry and personal care products.

In two-and-a-half years, the pantry distributed 354,000 pounds of food, 47,000 pounds of personal care items, served 5,974 families and 22,419 family members. Over 25,000 hours of volunteer time was logged during this period from October 2007 through May, 2010.

By the end of the Hunt collection period, numerous large boxes of food were filled and delivered to the pantry in mid December in time for the holiday season.

Toys for Tots gathering at University High School project

At the University High School project the Hunt/Gomez team hosted an onsite Christmas/Holiday Party for the jobsite team. The project team workers were provided with lunch, candy packages, and participation in a raffle. Additionally, through various donations from subcontractors, vendors and the Hunt/Gomez team, the workers with children were provided with an age and gender appropriate wrapped toy for each child. Following the party, two large bags of new toys were delivered to Toys for Tots.

Particular recognition should go to Project Accountant Marisol Delgado and Project Administrative Assistant Dawn Moss for making this happen in an effort to ensure the Holiday Season was little bit brighter for the jobsite team and the local community.

The Hunt/Moss Joint Venture has been working with LPR Construction Company for the installation and structural design of the impressive retractable roof structure at New Marlins Ballpark.

The Hunt/Moss Joint Venture has been working with LPR Construction Co. for the installation and structural design of the impressive retractable roof structure at New Marlins Ballpark. LPR Construction Co. has provided a closer look at what it takes to deliver such a complex and massive moveable structure.

The structural steel is being fabricated by STRUCTAL (a division of the CANAM Group). Structural design of the roof is by Walter P. Moore and the roof transport system has been designed and fabricated by UNI-Systems. Roof transporters are being installed by UNI-Systems and LPR.

Local contractor DKG is providing many essential site construction services including shoring foundations, miscellaneous steel erections as well as installation of the critical transporter rail components. Steel Fabricators, LLC in Fort Lauderdale, provided most of the newly fabricated shoring steel for the project

LPR Construction is also responsible for the structural design, fabrication and installation of the temporary shoring system to support the 533-foot and 569-foot span roof panels, which will crest at 255 feet above ground level. This shoring system, and the associated steel erection procedure for the roof structure, has been meticulously designed by LPR with the help of KL&A, Inc. Structural Engineers and Builders to resist hurricane level winds at any stage of construction.

The roof is comprised of three moving panels. The east and west panels are at a lower elevation over the stands and the center panel is at the highest elevation to allow for the baseball trajectories beginning in April of 2012. On September 11, 2010, LPR completed the erection of the primary structural span of the east panel. The east primary structural panel is 65 feet wide, spans 533 feet on an odd 6.43-degree angle from rail to rail and weighs approximately 2.4 million pounds.

An innovative construction shoring removal technique helps to stay on schedule as well as protects the structure and increases safety. In order to accommodate the anticipated ten inch vertical and simultaneous six inch horizontal truss deflections as the shore loads were removed, the roof panel was erected onto skewed ramps positioned atop the shoring tower structures with custom designed Hilman construction rollers installed between the ramps and the trusses.

Since the roof is designed for horizontal travel, LPR devised this method to lower the trusses off of the shores by merely rolling the roof panels down the supporting ramps as the transporters moved along at the same pace. The concept is similar to launching a ship into the water, except the descent is slow and controlled throughout the entire process.

The entire hydraulic lowering process was monitored and recorded with actual hydraulic pressures, which were easily converted to actual loads as the truss progressed down the ramps. This information, in conjunction with LPR calculations of theoretical loads, provided valuable feedback to Walter P. Moore and the Hunt/Moss construction team, proving that the structure was behaving in accordance with the structural design.

On November 11, 2010, the team “launched” the west roof panel and have now increased the height of the shores and started building the first of three upper panel roof segments. The team anticipates launching the next panel segment on January 14, 2011. The first and second “launches” were a great success and the entire project team has many partners to thank for doing their part contributing to the success of this new and innovative approach to retractable roof steel erection.
